Review - The Octopus Project - Hexadecagon

Hexadecagon as a whole is experimental, poppy, and consistent with its theme. The Octopus Project has successfully made an album that, with little or no words, is extremely expressive and potent for any listener.
Hexadecagon opens with a song called “Fuguefat”. Oddly named as it may be, it is the perfect opener for this 8-song EP. A rousing piano tune mixes with a drum beat and really gets the listener into the music. At about the two minute mark, the song shows its true colors, adding a full band (guitars, bass, and drums) into the mix, bringing the track full circle.
The rest of the songs follow in the footsteps of “Fuguefat” – they start out with one idea, then slowly, throughout the four to seven minutes, the band adds more and more until the song is a fully realized thing; what begins as a piece of a puzzle eventually comes together to create a beautiful, vibrant picture.
Number seven on the cut, “Hallucinists”, is a song worthy of extra praise. TOP is extremely creative and pits new-school sounds of technology (they use what sounds like video game samples) against retro vibes, which creates a very interesting dynamic for a song.
There are two ways to listen to and enjoy this album. The first is to simply have it on in the background while one is doing something else. The other is to sit back, put the headphones on, ignore everything else, and let the music play with your imagination.
