Review - Coin Under Tongue - Reception

Coin Under Tongue is one of a million bands out there that don’t have a large fan base and hasn’t sold tons of records. Unfortunately, the group doesn’t have anything going for them that will give them the reputation or recognition that a group should want. Reception is not a good start in the right direction.

The album can best be described as a mix of indie, rock, and hardcore. Don’t go thinking the group has blended all of these into one unique new sound. Rather, after listening to the CD, it becomes apparent that Coin Under Tongue doesn’t know what kind of music they want to play…or, really what they are doing.

The album starts out with fun drums, and a really sexy, dirty guitar riff on “Beyond Yes”. The sound is, at least, interesting, and a bit different. Guitars are rough, amps are up, and it’s really not that bad. Things take a step down when the lead vocalists begins, but all is not lost. Not until the chorus begins is the song over for any listener with taste. Indistinguishable noises – all of them painful – take over, and all respect is lost.

Sadly, this is how every song on the album goes. The first thirty seconds sound promising, but it is soon to disappoint.

The main issue with this album is that it has no sense of who or what it is. One song (“Seizure In The Stairwell”) draws vocal comparisons to Bob Dylan, while the next sounds like it came from a VFW scream-show where no one knew to turn down their amps. Back and forth the songs go, never really knowing where to go, and doing a terrible job of getting there.

Genre-hopping, poorly produced, and just plain annoying, Reception is a complete waste of time.
