The Island Def Jam Music Group announced today (Oct. 17) that Akinah Rahmaan will step up and fill the role of Vice President of Marketing. Senior Vice President of Marketing Chris Atlas, to whom Rahmaan will report directly, stated that she will be leaving her role as Senior Director of Marketing, a title she has held since she first started at IDJ in 2010.
In her new position, Rahmaan will be responsible for directing marketing campaigns for her roster of IDJ artists, a list that includes the likes of Frank Ocean, Big Sean, Pusha T, Fabolous and more. Specific activities within these marketing campaigns include the creation of marketing and advertising plans and artist development. In addition, she will also be in charge of image direction for these artists, which includes consumer marketing, print and electronic advertising, strategic marketing and brand partnerships, creative direction, and branding marketing.
"Akinah has proven to be a great marketing mind since joining the IDJ team," Atlas said in a statement. "I'm excited to see her continued growth with IDJ."
Rahmann added: "With the leadership of Barry Weiss, Steve Bartels, Joie Manda and Chris Atlas, I'm excited about the future of Def Jam and look forward to contributing my expertise on marketing in today's ever changing landscape."
Rahmaan came to Island Def Jam from Translation Advertising and Consultation where she held the position of Director of Music Strategy. In her time at TA&C, she created opportunities for branding and marketing through entertainment venues for such brands as Verizon, Bath & Body Works, General Motors, and Procter & Gamble.
Before that, Ms. Rahmaan worked at Violator Management, where she started her career in the music industry back in 1999. At Violator, she served as a manager for artists like Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, and LL Cool J. After that, she co-founded a music supervision company called MusicSoopz Inc., through which she worked on such films as The Gospel (2005), and Stomp The Yard (2007) as a music supervisor.
